Unilever Factory gets TPM award

Unilever Bangladesh’s manufacturing site at Kalurghat, Chittagong has been awarded the coveted TPM Excellence Award by Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance (JIPM) - a subsidiary of the Japan Management Association.

The institute, founded to promote efficiency techniques related to manufacturing, confers TPM awards to companies from all over the world who have made outstanding progress in implementing TPM to increase plant efficiency. This makes Unilever’s Kalurghat Factory the first manufacturing unit in Bangladesh to have received this honour and the only factory among the first generation Unilever factories in Asia to have reached this coveted milestone.

Hasan Zafar Chowdhury, General Factory Manager of Unilever Bangladesh Limited (UBL) and Shahidul Alam, Unilever Employees Union president received the award on behalf of Unilever Bangladesh at the 2006 TPM Awards Presentation Ceremony in Yokohama, Japan on 15th February, 2006. The award was officially handed over to the Chairman of Unilever Bangladesh Ltd., Mr. Sanjiv Mehta, at an official function held at the factory premises yesterday.

Unilever Bangladesh is the largest FMCG company in Bangladesh. Its Factory located at Kalurghat, Chittagong produces world renowned Home and Personal Care products such as Lux, Sunsilk, Closeup, Wheel etc. To survive in the post-SAFTA era and provide the highest level of customer service, Unilever’s Kalurghat factory realized that it had to be far better in terms of production cost & product quality compared to other Unilever factories in Asia which enjoyed huge economies of scale.

Consequently, it chose TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) under the guidance of JIPM as the route to become a World Class Manufacturing site and formally kicked off the journey in March 2003.

As TPM became a way of life for the people in Kalurghat Factory, the site gradually transformed from one of the costliest sites in Unilever Asia to one of the least cost sites in Asia while improving the Quality of its products to one of the best in Unilever Asia ..... a rare feat in such a short span of time!

Following the rigorous final audit, Dr. O'Shima commented, "As TPM Auditors, we look for 2 things mainly - the Process & the Results - this site has achieved significant improvements in terms of Results." The auditors further observed, "We saw the reflection of extraordinary hard-work, team effort, dedication and merit on the faces of the employees and their leaders (which we did not see in the other factories of this region). The faces looked tired but the eyes were glittering with an expectation to win....."

UBL Chairman and Managing Director Sanjiv Mehta congratulated everyone at the factory for their concerted effort and sincere cooperation in implementing the TPM way of life. He mentioned that the award was only a stepping stone towards greater successes and expressed his confidence that the Kalurghat Factory would set outstanding examples for other Unilever companies in the region to emulate.

In 2002, the Kalurghat Factory received the Unilever Gold Safety Award for having achieved 3 million manhours without any Lost Time Accidents. It also received the highest rating during Unilever Quality Audit in 2003 and in 2004, Lux manufactured at Kalurghat Factory was adjudged to be the "Best Lux in Asia".
