Unilever BizMaestros - Experience the Thrill of Real Business
Doing business in the hypothetical setting of a classroom is very different from doing business in real life. To allow the classroom masters of business an opportunity to “Experience the Thrill of Real Business” Unilever Bangladesh Limited (UBL) has rolled out the fourth instalment of Unilever Bizmaestros.
Unilever BizMaestros started in 2010 with the objective of identifying high performing graduates who aspires to join the league of Unilever managers. Being an intra and inter-university competition at the same time, ‘BizMaestros’ has become increasingly competitive since its inception with the number of participating Universities growing to 10 this year. The competition is well known for providing students a unique opportunity to work on real life and live challenges that UBL itself is encountering but this year Biamaestros was taken to newer heights with the incorporation of ‘point of sales’ activities which the finalists had to conduct.
Participants strategising in round 2 of the CompetitionThe first round of Bizmaestros 2013, which was the Intra University round, introduced students to a Unilever brand and required them to develop inspirational solutions to an identified issue. But what’s so different about that right? This was simply the screening round which nonetheless left the judges in awe of the way the young minds of today can think. Most winning teams developed highly futuristic campaigns, making great use of social media, audio visuals and augmented reality concepts.
But business does not run through brainstorming alone. At the end of the day it is perfect execution which generates sales. The 10 finalists thus had to prove themselves on the battlefield itself to claim the title of Master of Business or Bizmaestro.
The finalists underwent a daylong session where the top managers from the Unilever sales teams shared with them the art of selling.Post session, the teams were provided with a certain amount of virtual money with which they had to execute their strategy.They bid for actual stores, located all over the city, where they will be conducting their point of sales activities and purchased products in various mixes.With product and place taken care of the teams now had to focus on promotions.They had various merchandising material to choose from to drive take-off of the products and hence generate maximum sales.
The following day, on 3rd October, the teams went out to battle the real world. They set up the products and merchandising material in their chosen outlets with the aim of having the most money at day end. Sales reports were generated to determine whether the teams’ activities actually generated additional sales than a normal day.
Once this leg of the competition came to an end, the teams were asked to summarize their whole strategy and come up with innovative ideas for point-of-sales materials using their learning on consumers they had obtained from the outlet challenge. These POS materials were displayed during the grand finale.

As the sun rose on the 6th October 2013, 40 of the brightest students of the top universities of Bangladesh gathered at “La Vita” Hall of Hotel Lake Shore to fight it out, one last time, for the grand title of Bizmaestros 2013.
An amazing battle of convincing and defending ensued where each team’s strategy was scrutinized by UBL’s top leaders, Mr. Kamran Bakr - Chairman & Managing Director; Ms. Mononita Syed-Haq- Human Resource Director; Mr. K.S.M Minhaj – the Brand Building Director, Home Care & Foods; Mr. Zaved Akhter- the Brand Building Director, Personal Care and Mr. Mohsin Ahmed- Customer Development Director.
The judges were once again amazed by the ideas of generation next. After some very enriching deliberation later the title of Bizmaestros 2013 was finally awarded to the team from Institute of Business Administration (IBA), University of Dhaka because of their Innovative mindset, sound logic in strategising and customer orientation. The 1st runner up and 2nd runner up of the competition was North South University and Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Jahangirnagar University.
The finalists of Bizmaestros 2013 were all winners however, because the competition gave them the experience which would inevitably push them ahead of their peers. They are all now infused with a real understanding of not only strategising in business but also executing those strategies. Business at the end of the day is all about winning in the marketplace and the Bizmaestros 2013 competitors have learned how to do just that.
